alfabet recently announced its new Release 5.1 of planningIT, the leading product for IT Planning and Business IT Management. This new release includes significant new capabilities focused on how information is structured and visualized to appeal to many different stakeholders for deployment across a broad user base.

“We realized early on in the game that collaboration, visualization and communication are key to managing the relationship between business and IT, ensuring transparency and accelerating productivity in project planning cycles,” said Erik Masing, CEO and founder of alfabet. “In this release we’ve added major enhancements in the areas of visualizations, flexibility and collaboration to address the growing communities of stakeholders within our customer organizations.”

Release 5.1 highlights include fully customizable object profiles to enable each individual type of user to organize architecture information such as business capabilities, strategies, applications and information flows to best fit the task at hand. A further highlight is the Object Grid Report. planningIT’s ability to capture all of the many relationships each architecture object has makes its repository a powerhouse of information. The new “Object Grid Report” provides users with a graphical representation of relevant relationships to an individual object based on user-defined rules. Users can navigate through the graphically displayed network structure or hierarchy by simply clicking on the objects. Another new feature provides quick access to object information in a list using “chart views”. The feature allows users to directly open portfolio charts, lifecycle charts, business support map reports or information flow diagrams on any object in the list report.

alfabet announced recently a surge in its US revenue growth resulting in its best quarter in the history of the company. The company added several leading companies in the financial services and IT sectors to its US client portfolio, which now includes some of the top 10 companies in the banking, insurance and IT sectors in the US measured by market value. alfabet’s group revenues for Q3 were up 38% compared to the same quarter last year. White Paper - Business IT Management

New White Paper on Business IT Management

The failure of the IT organization in meeting business expectations does not have one single cause, but various that all need to be addressed if the situation is to be changed. First of all, management of the supplier-customer relationship between business and IT commonly lacks consistency and process. The second problem is found within IT itself. It is lack of transparency of the IT landscape and how it supports business – i.e. which processes, capabilities, locations and organizations are supported by which parts of IT. Lastly, and probably most importantly, integrated IT planning processes that ensure business and IT communicate regularly, clearly and with responsibility are missing.

Business IT Management comprises a set of core capabilities to sustainably manage and ensure IT’s contribution to the business value. Essentially, Business IT Management aims at planning and monitoring the performance of IT support throughout its entire life-cycle – ensuring that business strategy and demands are completely understood, prioritized and executed on and that the costs, quality and risks to IT support are known and considered during decision-making. It is a facilitator to the team of planners, strategists, architects and portfolio managers in the CIO office enabling them to transform business wish into successful projects and reliable operations. The core capabilities of Business IT Management are:

 Business Relationship Management
 Enterprise Architecture Management
 IT Planning
 IT Financial Management
 IT Risk Management

This new white paper explores the role of each of these capabilities in meeting the challenge of supporting effective Business IT Management.
