alfabet Announces planningIT Release 4.1

alfabet is pleased to announce Release 4.1 of planningIT for architecture-driven IT planning and management. This new release includes significant new features aimed at enhancing the user experience and supporting the ITO in effective governance.

Automated Data Quality Management ensures a reliable information base for decisions on architectural changes by allowing the enterprise to define "consistency monitors". These monitors alert responsible users to data quality problems in their domain of control. Such rule-based monitors could expose, for example:
an incompletely documented information flow in which business data is not    associated with an application
a critical application that requires high availability yet is being fed by an application    that has considerably lower availability
a compliance requirement that is not being met

Release 4.1 of planningIT extends on its powerful workflow engine to improve usability and flexibility in designing and executing workflows. Workflow Diagrams have been introduced to visualize workflow definitions using classic workflow diagram elements such as swim lanes, event and task boxes, and sequence flows - clearly depicting the actions, decision points and players involved in a workflow.

planningIT’s project management framework in the product’s Program Portfolio Management module has undergone significant new development in Release 4.1 in answer to customer needs for an individually definable project framework. In providing a generic definition of project hierarchies, the new release offers more flexibility in terminology, depth and process when managing the project portfolio. Users are free to define the project hierarchy (e.g. program, project, sub-project) according to company conventions, using any amount of levels and company-specific terminology. Customers can associate the project management activity – for example, budgeting, solution architecture planning, cost accrual planning or monitoring – at any level, also at several levels. As-Is and To-Be architectures can be inherited from one hierarchy to the next and customers can define customer-specific attributes, wizards and workflows specific to the individual levels of the hierarchy.

Release 4.1 also offers better support for prioritizing projects and planning investments by showing how project budgets are allocated over years. For more information on this and other new features, please click on the link below.

The IT-Finance Connection

Informed Investment Planning Cuts Inefficiency and Wasteful Spending

In a recent article for IT Finance Connection, Erik Masing, CEO of alfabet, provides insight into how to eliminate the guesswork from IT investment planning. With research showing that between 10% and 30% of IT’s growing annual spending is wasted, CFOs and CIOs need to be able to improve predict ability of timeframes, costs and returns from major IT projects.

By performing Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) as a proactive planning and analytic process, it can support sustained business strategy alignment, information transparency, governance, control and intra-organizational collaboration. EAM is a core part of the strategic IT planning and management process and when adopted in a systematic and process-oriented approach can bring about sustained improvements in the effectiveness of IT performance and investments.

Product Tour Workflow Management

New White Paper and Product Tour on Workflow Management and planningIT

Most organizations will have a process set up for IT Planning. The question is how effective and efficient that planning process is. This will determine IT’s agility in supporting business change. Automated workflows are a way to anchor processes into the enterprise to ensure their efficacy. They also lead to more streamlined processes and deliver the ability to evaluate and measure the efficiency of processes.

A new white paper from alfabet entitled "Introducing Process to IT Planning" explores the benefits automated workflows can provide an enterprise including:

integration of the IT Planning discipline into the whole organization
improvement in IT/Business collaboration
support for IT Governance
improving recognition and credibility for the Enterprise Archtiecture Group in the    organization

The white paper details some basic EA processes and demonstrates how planningIT's workflow capabilities can be implemented to establish best practice IT planning processes.

Additionally, alfabet has published a new product tour on Automated Workflow. alfabet's product tours explore topics in which planningIT is especially effective and in which our customers have realized significant benefits. This new product tour demonstrates how planningIT:

supports configuration and implementation of automated workflows for    establishing EAM and IT planning processes
tracks and coordinates the activities of the various stakeholder contributions to the    IT planning process
monitors and measures the quality of IT planning processes to be able to improve    their efficiency and effectiveness

International Banking Leader Licenses alfabet’s planningIT Strategic IT Planning and Management Solution

Fifth Largest Bank in the World to Implement Solution to Manage Roadmap of Current and Planned Initiatives

alfabet today announced that the fifth largest bank in the world and a European leader in banking and financial services has licensed planningIT for use in its Fixed Income Group’s IT roadmap initiative.

The bank does business in 85 countries, including a significant and growing presence in the U.S. The Fixed Income Group’s comprehensive approach to developing solutions for its clients integrates expertise in global credit, interest rates group and foreign exchange.

planningIT enables companies to strategically plan and manage their IT to realize business goals. This modular, standard software is unique in tightly coupling business priorities and IT deliverables with current and future initiatives. It supports every business activity in the planning process from demand to budget. planningIT comprises a logical IT inventory for transparency and focused modules that enable collaborative IT planning.

Initially, the bank will use alfabet's planningIT to gain an overview of and depict a roadmap of the Fixed Income Group’s current and planned initiatives, projects and their relation to the IT architecture. Currently, the client uses a large Excel spreadsheet for this purpose. But since this spreadsheet is very difficult to maintain and offers limited functionality, the bank will use planningIT to gather and analyze information necessary for the planning process.

“We’ve pulled together one- and three year architecture views for all areas of our Fixed Income Group and we have a list of all work, initiatives and activities expected,” a spokesperson for the bank said. “But until now, we didn’t have a satisfactory way of tying this information all together. planningIT will help us better manage this information and ensure our IT plans are aligned with our business objectives.”

According to Erik Masing, CEO of alfabet, “We are excited to be working with this banking leader. As they move further along with their initiative, we also look forward to partnering even more closely to help them achieve their objectives.”
